Let's begin with the easiest guitar scale before learning the blues: the pentatonic scale. The scale is called pentatonic simply because it is composed of 5 notes. The example below is a G Major Pentatonic Scale. It is composed of the notes G (the "root" note), Bb, C, D, F and G.

Play the G Major Pentatonic Scale on your guitar by starting with the "G" note on the third fret of your lower (or thicker) E string. The "G" note is encircled as follows:

Proceed by playing every succeeding note in the G Major Pentatonic Scale right after the "G" note. Begin by playing the note on the guitar string (3rd fret) which is numbered "1". Continue playing according to the order of numbers.
